Brettaberry is the latest release in Wicked Weed’s Terra Locale Series, which focuses on local ingredients. This time that means Blackberries, Strawberries, Blueberries & Haw Creek Honey. Ok, I’m on board.

This ale passes the looks test, for sure. It pours a bright pink/purple with great head retention. It also passes the smell test with what can only be described as a jammy nose. Lots of fruit. It’s the taste test where Brettaberry loses me, personally. It’s slightly tart, but other than that it falls flat for me.

It’s a farmhouse ale, but nothing standout like it’s smell suggests. There’s an odd, metallic almost, aftertaste that I can’t quite put my finger on. There’s definitely the Brett presence, but I don’t think that’s it. For a beer whose “inspiration is drawn from a freshly baked berry pie”, I was hoping for more fruit. A half-pound of fruit per gallon sure seems like enough, but maybe more? Less honey? I’m not sure what, but Wicked Weed is close with this one. They just need to get the taste to catch up to that smell.
