You know what’s better than root beer with alcohol in it? Root beer with alcohol AND ice cream in it, that’s what. House of Hops on Glenwood was serving such concoctions up for their one-year anniversary, so we sent NASCAR/beer correspondent Cory Smith out to scope the scene. Here’s his report.
Going into Saturday afternoon, we knew House of Hops provided quality beer to Raleigh citizens. What we quickly found out after dropping by for their one-year anniversary was they also know how to throw a party.
The bustling bottle shop was almost literally hopping on Saturday with no empty seat in the house. Bluegrass music was playing, taps were flowing and—most importantly—ice cream was being scooped.
Yes, ice cream. Adult root beer floats were being served with a mixture of ice cream and Not Your Father’s Root Beer from Small Town Brewery. While it wasn’t an NC beer, the concoction was a perfect blend of dessert and beer that a regular float could never touch.
The root beer floats were a massive hit, but the real winner on Saturday was the Wicked Weed Dark Age Bourbon Stout on draft. This caramel cold one lived up to the name with a dark black body and strong bourbon taste.
Wicked Weed found a way to pack a lot of punch in this craft beer with hints of chocolate and coffee beans with a warm finish. Don’t expect a crushable brew when you delve into this bourbon beauty. But even on a warm summer day, this beer is a must-have for bourbon lovers.
The little bottle shop off Glenwood might be a baby at just one year old, but it has plenty of promise. With an endless collection of NC craft beers in bottles and on tap along with treats like Not Your Father’s Root Beer, Raleigh truly has a gem in House of Hops.
